about

This project was compiled in association with www.breaktothebeat.com for the purpose of documenting Hip Hop culture that evolved in and around Milton Keynes, England, during the 1990s.

True Element were a Hip Hop collective founded by rapper/producer Kraze One during the mid-1990s. Kraze One produced and funded several independent releases for the project during its inception and nurtured its evolution towards becoming one of Milton Keynes’s pioneering Hip Hop crews. True Element eventually evolved into a full live band that incorporated several of the city's musicians and vocalists. For a detailed account of True Elements musical legacy please visit: www.breaktothebeat.com/mk-hip-hop-culture-part-three-1996-2000/true-element-part-1-the-foundation/

"Take a look around/Detonate the funk" were the first recordings created for the True Element project that was originally released as a cassette single and limited-edition CD in the summer of 1997. Both recordings were produced and arranged by Kraze One and feature performances by rapper Mr Lusta and DJ Maniphest with artwork for both cassette and CD releases created by Matt Meech Design.

The roots of the True Element project date back to 1995 which is when the original studio jam of "Take a look around" was recorded at Audio lab studio, Buckingham. Both Kraze One and Mr Lusta were in the final stages of undertaking a sound recording course and as part of a practical assignment created the live demo recording with DJ Danny Cooley. The trio worked together on several local music ventures at the time under the collective name of Crazy Options.

Kraze One progressed to work part time as a studio engineer using downtime to experiment with Hip Hop production and it was this opportunity that led to the construction of the "Take a look around instrumental". Kraze One used the original studio jam that was created using pre-recorded instrumentals and turntables as a guide for the arrangement and re-recorded the vocals with Mr Lusta during the summer of 1996. The recording was finally completed in 1997 when DJ Maniphest added the scratches and cuts.

“Detonate the funk” was produced and recorded in 1997 and features scratches and backup vocals by DJ Maniphest. A previous unreleased demo version of “Detonate the funk” created in 1996 with rapper Killa Joul now forms part of the digital release of Kraze One’s “Straight from the sector” recording project that is also available to play and download free from Bandcamp.

The “Take a look around” cassette single that was released in 1997 contained vocal versions of both True Element recordings and the limited edition CD included an extra three bonus tracks that featured performances by Kraze One, Mr Lusta, Danny Cooley and several other members of the Buckingham Hip Hop community. Several of the bonus tracks formed part of Kraze one's debut recording project "Straight from the sector".

The digital re-release of "Take a look around/Detonate the funk" contains the vocal versions of both recordings from the original release as well as the previously unreleased instrumental versions and the studio jam from 1995 used by Kraze One as a guide to construct "Take a look around".
